John Flaxman, English sculptor, decorative designer, and illustrator. Lined-paper notebook with stiff drab covers and ink entries in divers hands. Begins on December 7th, 1826 (Flaxman's death date) and ends on December 20, 1836. Records stock and cash amounts held by Herries, Farquhar Co., half-yearly dividends, and numerous payments for works. Among the transactions listed are: sales of his compositions to Hesiod, Æschylus, Dante, Homer and "The Acts of Mercy"; payment for the production of two monuments and a bust; sales of marble; and rent payments from J. Denman. Notable figures involved in the transactions include Dominic Colnaghi, Henry Crabbe Robinson, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Lord Palmerston, and John Murray; there are also a number of payments from Longman Co., the publishers. The entries appear to be in the same hand from the beginning of the notebook until some time in 1833; it could be the hand of Mary Ann Flaxman, who died on April 17th of that year. Some entries could be in the hand of Maria Denman, who was one of Flaxman's executors.
